How Did Bike the Bend Start?

The Louise Addicott and Georgina Joshi Foundation, the Addicott-Joshi family’s 501(c)(3) non-profit foundation, is pleased to sponsor Bike the Bend because family bike rides create great memories; memories like Louise Addicott riding with her husband, Yatish, and children, Georgina, Tenzing and Avatar Joshi.

The Addicott-Joshi family wants families and friends to create their own great memories by getting out on the streets and bike trails of South Bend, Mishawaka, and St. Joseph County, Indiana.  You can experience the fun of riding together while talking and laughing, without worrying about motorized vehicles.  Enjoy the beauty of nature in our community, the historic architecture in our neighborhoods, and the picturesque college campuses of Notre Dame, IUSB, and Bethel College.

Bike riders of all skill levels are invited to take part in this new event!  Through the work of many volunteers, a route of approximately 30 miles has been developed, which has something for everyone.

In addition to helping create great memories, The Louise Addicott and Georgina Joshi Foundation hopes Bike the Bend will:

  • Highlight the beauty of the distinctive city neighborhoods and college campuses (Notre Dame, IUSB and Bethel) in South Bend and Mishawaka, and St. Joseph County
  • Educate the community to be more bicycle friendly, introducing community bike routes and networks
  • Support the mission of Bike Michiana Coalition and other local biking advocacy groups
  • Encourage bike riding for recreation, fitness, transportation and a healthy lifestyle
  • Establish South Bend and Mishawaka as "Bicycle Friendly Communities"
  • Promote bicycle education and safety in our community
  • Encourage people to see the area and each other from a different perspective
  • Promote South Bend, Mishawaka, St. Patrick's County Park, Notre Dame, IUSB, and Bethel College to visitors in our area
